In the hustle and bustle of today's fast-paced world, it's easy to overlook the myriad of facilities and amenities that we have access to. From proper stationery to spacious classrooms, we find ourselves blessed with everything essential for our educational endeavors. However, for thousands of underprivileged children across Pakistan, even the most basic necessities can seem like a distant luxury. Amidst this backdrop of abundance, we recently had the privilege of stepping into a reality that opened our eyes to the resilience and potential that flourish in the most challenging circumstances.

In the past week, we had the honor of being part of Project Justuju, a remarkable volunteer initiative orchestrated by LUMS Community Service Society. Alongside 1,175 dedicated volunteers, we embarked on a transformative journey to serve at underprivileged schools in both Lahore and Karachi. Our mission spanned five intense yet profoundly unforgettable days. Equipped with a meticulously tailored curriculum, we set forth to teach, inspire, and most importantly, to learn.

This experience was more than a mere act of giving back; it was a profound awakening to the grim realities of young students across our nation.Throughout our time at Project Justuju, we were met with incredibly talented students who held insatiable curiosity and unwavering eagerness. These children, despite their daily struggles, approached learning with a resilience that was nothing short of inspiring. With meager resources and often lacking even the most basic supplies, their radiant smiles stood as a testament to education's transformative potential—the power to conquer any obstacle. Through interactive sessions and collaborative projects, we witnessed the immense significance of cultivating an inclusive learning environment and nurturing a strong teacher-student bond. The joyful smiles lighting up their faces as they immersed themselves in our engaging activities only solidified our dedication to supporting quality education for all.

However, amongst all the joy and laughter, we couldn’t help but notice the pressing issues that demanded attention.
Firstly, certain students exhibited hostile behaviors—quarreling and even resorting to physical violence over trivial matters. While disagreements are inevitable, it's imperative to address such conflicts with mutual respect and accountability. It became evident that some students were exposed to violence on a daily basis and, hence, had internalized such behavior.
Secondly, the students we taught possessed contextual knowledge but were slightly apprehensive when it came to presenting their knowledge in front of their peers, constantly doubting their abilities. Through some encouragement, we were able to let their inner confidence shine.
Furthermore, over the course of five days, we noted a disturbing trend—a significant number of students frequently complained of ailments like headaches and stomachaches. Upon inquiry, we noted that many do not have breakfast before coming to school. It is crucial to feed your body with essential nutrients every day to help your mind function at its best; unfortunately, not every child enjoys this privilege.
Moreover, we also observed that the school campus itself was quite small with limited time for students to engage in physical activity outside of the classroom. Many students had inadequate school supplies, often lacking basic stationary such as pencils, sharpeners, erasers, colored pencils and notebooks. The class we taught was a combination of Nursery and Grade 1, combined due to space constraints, leading to frustration among students cooped up indoors all day.
Students often became irritated sitting inside all day and found excuses to leave the classroom. At times, fights broke out when it came to sharing meager school supplies. All these issues profoundly hindered the learning process and served as a stark reminder of the work that is yet to be done before we can assure quality education for all.

We are indebted to the various sponsors and brilliant minds who propelled the Project Justuju initiative forward. Their commitment and vision birthed this transformational project, which began as a small step but achieved monumental impact. The heads of the affiliated schools, driven by their passion of giving back to society, formed these non-profit initiatives that developed into a multitude of chain schools—such as Doors of Awareness and Kawish Welfare Trust—showcasing how a collective effort can yield incredible change. This serves as a poignant reminder that everyone can contribute to such noble causes and bring about meaningful change to our society.

As we reflect on our time with Project Justuju, we realize that it was more than just community service; it was about forging connections. The bond we built with all the sweet children and fellow volunteers was truly heartwarming. We learned to stand in solidarity, harbor patience, and build empathy. Ultimately, this experience left us humbled, grateful, and more determined than ever to continue supporting initiatives like Project Justuju. We hope we inspired these brave individuals to learn some more.
Let's work together to create a brighter future for these young minds and address the challenges they face head-on. In conclusion, our world needs more initiatives like Project Justuju. Small steps, fueled by passion and purpose, can ignite sweeping changes. As we move forward, let us remember that each of us has a role to play in uplifting society. By fostering quality education, nurturing resilience, and creating a supportive environment, we can collectively create a more equitable world. Together, let's stand as beacons of hope, ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the right to quality education. Let's work to create a brighter future for these young minds and address the challenges they face head-on.
As Michelle Obama once said:
"Education is not just a pathway to success; it's a beacon of hope that illuminates the path for all, regardless of where they begin."
